Boaters’ Simplified Guide to Sunscreen

There are 2 forms of Ultraviolet rays from the sun that reach us here on earth.

  • UVA rays are the deep penetrating rays that lead us boaters to be so tan. Unfortunately, they are also the dominant cause of visible aging & the deadliest skin cancer Melanoma.
  • UVB rays are the rays that cause us to burn crispy red. They remain a serious factor in developing forms of skin cancers such as Carcinomas.
As a result we need to use Sunscreens that block both; known as “broad spectrum” or “multi-spectrum”.

Ingredients to look for are avobenzone (brand name: Parsol 1789), oxybenzone, ecamsule (brand name: Mexoryl), titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The Skin Cancer Foundation says, “SPFs beyond 50 are unnecessary.” in most cases.

Application Tips:

  • Apply 1 ounce of sunscreen – enough to fill a shot glass – to cover the body; most people use only one-quarter to one-half that amount.
  • Put it on 30 minutes before exposure. Reapply every 1 ½ to 2 hours or immediately after swimming.
  • Reflective surfaces, such as the water surrounding us, reflect over 80% of the rays we are hit with. That means we are hit by each TWICE!
  • “Water resistant” means the SPF rating remains after 40 minutes of water exposure; “waterproof” means it will last 80 minutes.

Children face the highest risk:

Just one instance of blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence increases the chance of developing Melanoma later in life by more than 2x!! Babies under 6 months should be kept completely out of the sun: absolutely no direct sunlight!! High SPF sunscreens should be used after. Most skin damage occurs in the first 18 years. You can’t be too protective on this front.

At least you don’t have to worry about sunscreen on your Corinthian Marine Boat Carpet!! We built the sunscreen in with UV blockers to resist fading & blistering sunburn!
